We were visiting Lahtinen’s felt slipper factory in February. We were there with 3-6 classes. Factory started action on year 1921. There are two factories in Jämsä. There aren’t any other felt factories in Finland. Felt slippers are pure Jämsä products.

Making Felt slippers: felt plates cut to right shape. Then felt plates sew to felt slippers. When they are in the right shape, they make felt about five times. If they colour felt, they do it after first feltmaking. After every feltmaking time, the felt stretched. When they are made felt five times felt slippers revise to proper shape. Then they take slippers to big oven, where is about 60-70 degrees warm. Slippers are there over the night. After that they finish the slippers and they put soles to them. Then those slippers are ready.

In one day factory makes about 200 pairs of morning slippers and a little bit less felt slippers.

Vierailimme Lahtisen huopatehtaalla helmikuussa 3- 6 luokkien kanssa. Tehdas aloitti toimintansa vuonna 1921. Jämsässä on kaksi tehdasta. Suomessa ei ole muita huopatehtaita. Huopatossut ovat aito jämsäläinen tuote.

Huopalevyt leikataan oikeaan muotoon. Sitten huopapalat ommellaan huopatossuiksi. Kun ne ovat oikeassa muodossa ne huovutetaan viiteen kertaan. Jos huopa värjätään, värjäys tehdään ensimmäisen huovutuksen jälkeen. Jokaisen huovutuksen jälkeen huopa venytetään. Viiden huovutuskerran jälkeen huopaset muokataan lopulliseen muotoonsa. Sitten huopaset laitetaan isoon uuniin, missä on noin 60-70 asteen lämpötila. Huopaset ovat siellä yön yli. Sen jälkeen huopaset viimeistellään ja niihin laitetaan pohjalliset. Sitten huopaset ovat valmiit. Yhdessä päivässä tehdas valmistaa noin 200 paria aamutossuja ja hieman vähemmän huopasia.
